Steamboat Has the Most Skiable Terrain Open in CO

The Steamboat Ski Resort officially has the most skiable terrain open in Colorado. Steamboat started the 2009-10 season with relatively low snowfall and low base levels reported up until the end of December. That trend reversed with the latest several batches of snow, and Steamboat now boasts more skiable acres open than any other mountain in Colorado.

The 2,692 open acres in Steamboat, of a possible 2,965, barely edges out the 2,689 at Snowmass and easily surpasses the 2,305 at Vail. Breckenridge reported 1,689 acres, Keystone had 749 and Loveland reported 206 acres open.

According to Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp., snow fell 17 days in December, and 96.25 inches of it has fallen this season. By the end of December 2008, the mountain had 140 inches total at mid-mountain, and 166 had fallen by this time in the record-setting 2007-08 season.

Snow is expected to settle in tonight, continuing with a 50 percent chance or better until Sunday with accumulation of 3 to 6 inches in town.

The 2009/2010 ski season is well underway. Just about all my fondest memories of the best skiing days in Steamboat have been in the month of January. A month when the conditions are epic; the powder days are plentiful; and we enjoy wide open ski runs and no lift lines. Bar opening season, and the last week of the season, January is the most affordable time to visit Steamboat Springs. Our Steamboat lodging prices are unbeatable, the deals are plentiful... and allow me to say it again, the snow conditions are excellent!

Happy New Year

SNOW: 1" (24 hrs); 10" (48 hrs); Base: 48"; Total: 166"
CONDITIONS: Powder/Packed Powder
LIFTS: 18/18
TRAILS: 158/165
TEMP: 14/-12 F

Finally! A perfect blue-bird day. All this snow has been amazing, but it is nice to see the sunshine. However, don't let the sunshine fool you. It is still very cold out. The temperature has been hovering close to zero for a few hours already. With 126 inches of snow in December, three and a half feet of that in the last week, these cold temperatures are sure to preserve some powder stashes for days to come. The Steamboat Ski Resort has it all today -- excellent groomers, challenging bumps, and powder in the trees.

20 more inches this weekend, 166 inches of snow so far!

SNOW: 9" (24 hrs); 20" (48 hrs); Base: 50"; Total: 166"
CONDITIONS: Powder/Packed Powder
LIFTS: 17/18
TRAILS: 158/165
TEMP: 16/-14 F

The storms just keep on rolling in to Steamboat Springs. This weekend, the Steamboat Ski Resort received another 20 inches of snow in 48 hours. On Sunday morning, we woke up to the snow report of 11 inches of new snow, and 9 new inches since the ski resort closed on Saturday. Will I ever be able to sleep in again!

One of the greatest things about Steamboat is the trees. Sure, we are renowned for just how awesome our tree skiing is. But what is not often talked about is the protection they provide. On most snowy days in Steamboat, the flakes are big, fat, fluffy clusters of snow. So light and delicate that skiing during a winter storm is very pleasant.

Then occasionally, like every other ski resort, we get storms that blow in like yesterday's storm. Bitterly cold, windy conditions with snow that can bite the skin. But on days like this, you can escape the elements in the trees. Take your turns in the peace and quiet of the aspens and pines.
