Winter storm warning for Steamboat until 6pm Wed. 33" & counting!

Forget about putting spring wax on your skis because the Steamboat Ski Area is boasting over 33 inches of fresh powder snow in 48 hours. In the past 7 days we have received over 63 inches of new snow. So far this year we have received 368", exceeding our annual snowfall average of around 335".

I can always tell a good powder day by the snow on my car. If I can open my car door slightly and slam it to release ALL the snow on my car, I know it is going to be a very special champagney snow day! And that's just how my day powder started...

With more than 30 feet of snow this winter, Steamboat has reached another snow milestone, recording a four-wire winter, when the snow stacks up past the fourth row of fence wires. Yampa Valley ranchers have traditionally measured the severity of a Routt County winter by how high the snow stacks up against their four fence wires.

Snow is expected through Wednesday afternoon!

Get your snorkels out! Epic powder skiing in Steamboat Springs

Powderhounds: rejoice! Golfers: put away your clubs. Mountain bikers: put away your wheels. Winter has returned to Steamboat Springs with a vengeance to deliver one of the best powder days of the season. Personally, today would officially fit snugly in my top 10 ski days ever!

15 inches of text book Champagne Powder® snow fell on the Steamboat Ski Resort overnight, after a warm bluebird day in Steamboat. That's right - the snow all fell after the last chair came to rest yesterday. Better yet, Spring Break for the majority of the country has ended and Steamboat is blissfully quiet. That means there's plenty of freshies to go around!

The 'groomed' runs had well over a foot of light n' fluffy snow ensuring the smoothest skiing imaginable. And the tree skiing... A few turns in Steamboat's tree runs today prove why we are officially renowned for having the best tree skiing. Period.

Can you remember a time when you had a really delicious meal with friends and family? A meal so delicious that everyone is very quite, albeit the occasional "mmm"and expressions of gratitude to the chef? That's what skiing in Steamboat was like today. It was so peaceful and quiet as everyone floated through the powder, with only the occasional "Yeeeee Haaaaaw" to break you away from your mesmerizing turns.

...and it's still snowing!

There's still time to book a Steamboat ski vacation. Take advantage of some of the best lodging and lift deals ever!

LIFTS: 16/18

Yesterday was bitterly cold in Steamboat Springs (by Steamboat standards, not by mid Westerner standards!!). Last night, a storm system collided with the Steamboat Ski Area and these cold temperatures resulting in 9 inches of fresh powder, 8 of which fell after the ski resort closed. This is the real thing - this is the legendary Champagne Powder® snow that Steamboat is famous for! The lightest blow-blow-off-your-glove snow you can imagine; the kind of snow you float through and it falls back in on your tracks, so it seems like you have endless fresh tracks; no snow man can come of this kind of snow...

I can't capture today's flakes on film, but check these out to get a taste:

This another epic Tuesday. Each year it seems like there is one day of the week that catches all of the snow storms. This year, it seems, Tuesday is the chosen day!

Frankly, if you are not here in Steamboat skiing today, you are missing out. Nevermind, there are plenty more powder days ahead. That is the beauty of Steamboat!

Storm to bring significant snow to Steamoat Ski Area

A foot or more of snow is expected on the slopes of Mount Werner and at high elevations in Steamboat Springs this weekend.
This is perfect timing since the Steamboat Ski Resort is doubling the amount of terrain open for this weekend so that nearly 2,000 acres, almost 65% of the mountain will be open. That means there will be 3,668 vertical feet of skiing and riding!
This is the last weekend to take advantage or ResortQuest Steamboat's unbeatable lodging package - SKI FREE IN STEAMBOAT OPENING DAY TO CHRISTMAS DAY - Get FREE Steamboat Lift Tickets.
Tomorrow, the resort expects 104 trails offering 1,896 acres of terrain with 9 of 18 lifts spinning for skiers and boarders. The majority of new terrain opening is in the Sunshine and Priest Creek areas including Tomahawk, Flintlock, Quickdraw, Rendezvous Way, Sunshine Liftline, Rolex, Westside, Broadway, Daybreak and more. In addition, East Face, North St. Pats and Last Chance will open on the north side of the Ski Area on Saturday. However, Moonlight, Lights Out, lower Shadows and lower Priest Creek, Sundown Express liftlines as well as Christmas Tree Bowl and the Chutes will remain closed. The hugely popular mini-terrain park on Lil’ Rodeo will continue to feature rails for those looking for a park play.
In addition to the 5 chairlifts already operating, South Peak, Sundown Express, Elkhead and Sunshine Express will begin spinning on Saturday.
A strong storm system will begin moving through the area today, though the wind, cold and snowfall expected to intensify Saturday, with most of the storm’s accumulation to take place Saturday evening and early Sunday, said meteorologist Norv Larson, of the National Weather Service’s Grand Junction Forecast Office.
Overnight lows are poised to dip as low as 12 degrees Saturday night, with wind gusts up to 25 mph.

The Steamboat Ski Area reported a 26-inch base at mid-mountain Thursday and has recorded 66 inches of total snowfall so far this season.

Each day I talk to people all over the country and everyone always asks about the weather. Well, it's sunny one minute, lightly snowing the next, dumping snow the next, and before you know it the clouds have parted again. The snow just keeps on coming.

We've had another 16 inches of fresh snow in 48 hours and 10 inches overnight, 5 inches falling after the Steamboat ski resort closed. Yep! It's another powder day in Steamboat Springs.

We're only 25 inches away from the all-time snow record! Steamboat recorded a 400-inch Champagne Powder snow season for just the 6th time since 1979/80. This is the fastest the resort has reached the 400-inch level and is just three inches ahead at this date of the record holding 1995/1996 season when it finished the season with 460.25 inches.

Best Weekend of the Season!

This weekend was my best weekend of the year so far. Sure, I have had several epic powder skiing days this year, days which definitely go down in my top 10 ever. But this weekend was the perfect combination of weather ...
Saturday was a perrrrrfect blue-bird day. Being warm and sunny, there was no need to rush up to the ski resort before a lazy sleep-in and a big breakfast. Chris and I cruised around the mountain, enjoying fast groomers and soft moguls. For the first time this year, we made it to Slopeside Bar to enjoy Sunshine and Sunshine Wheat Beer with friends. Sunny days and extended apres skiing are definitely some of my favorite winter days.
Then, on Sunday we woke up to 9 inches of new snow!!! Alas, no sleep-in. But it was worth it! The conditions were unexpected, and brilliant. Definitely one of my best days ever. First, we dropped into the trees to the left of Heavenly Daze and around Teds Ridge. The powder was untracked and sailing over my knees... and this was only the beginning. Every run we took on Sunday was hypnotic. Every run we found was untracked. I couldn't believe our luck!
The Steamboat Ski Resort continues to report new records for this season. These stats translate to personal stats for all of our resident ski bums. 414 inches of snow means that we can expore deeper and deeper into Steamboat's infamous trees. Ski terrain for the very first time, terrain that can only be dreamed of when there is enough snow to cover the natural hazards. No matter how long any of us have been here, and now matter how many days we have each skied, I challenge anyone who believes they have skied every possible run on the mountain. This is the beauty of the Steamboat Ski Resort.
So, what are the latest stats?
Steamboat Ski Resort Press Release, March 3, 2008: "Steamboat recorded another snow milestone this morning, recording a 400-inch Champagne Powder snow season for just the 6th time since 1979/80. This is the fastest the resort has reached the 400-inch level and is just three inches ahead at this date of the record holding 1995/1996 season when it finished the season with 460.25 inches."
"Since November 21st, snow has fallen 78 out of 103 days (75.7%) with 45 of those days recording four or more inches. This season at mid-mountain, the resort has seen 17 inches in October; 23 inches in November; 126 inches in December (3rd snowiest); 129 inches in January (2nd snowiest) and 104 inches in February (2nd snowiest); and 9 inches in March for a combined total of 408 inches (34 feet).
In addition to registering another four-wire winter, the resort hit three key milestones within just a month of each other: surpassed 300-inch mark on 2/1/08; six days later surpassed 350-inch mark on 2/7/08; and today surpassed the 400-inch mark. Furthermore, Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® received more than 100 inches of snow for three consecutive months (December, January & February) for the first time in resort history."
Spring skiing in Steamboat Springs is undoubtedly going to be excellent. Unfortunately, there's only 5 more weeks to enjoy this memorable season. Epic snow won't keep the steamboat ski resort open after April 6, but by then, I am itching to get on my mountain bike anyway.

Yesterday I escaped work at ResortQuest a little early and went for a snowshoe up on Emerald Mountain at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area in downtown Steamboat Springs. To start, the clouds were moody but not threatening; by the time we trudged down the mountain we were caked in big fat fluffy flakes of snow. It was dumping.

Looks like the storm continued through the night and buried the Steamboat Ski Resort in another 9 inches at mid-mountain, and 13" of snow at the summit. This morning, the mountain was socked in, but this afternoon, the clouds have sailed on and the sky is so blue it hurts to look at it.

Sounds like Steamboat's Straightalker, Kat Murphy, experienced the best of the powder day today, and enthusiastically explained: "Yet another powder day in Steamboat! Yesterday and last night more snow fell on the mountain, filling in yesterdays ski tracks and leaving a fresh canvas for powder hounds to carve and design. We have a phrase for it..." Total Reclaim " or just TR . All you need to do is go back to the place you last skied and see if you can still see your tracks. If not, then you are lucky enough to experience TR."

"...The snow this week has a bit more moisture in it. A sign of Spring and slightly more moderate temperatures. Your skis really float on top of it. It is consistent and creamy and makes for really enjoyable carving."

The snow just keeps on comin'! Yesterday was another epic powder day in Steamboat Springs with 10 inches falling overnight, 9 of which fell after the ski resort closed. We have had a mixture of snow and sunshine for days. Another perfect week in paridise.

Unfortuntely, I was not out in the sunshine and on the Steamboat Ski Resort this morning, so I turn to Steamboat's straighttalker, Andy for feedback: "...the cord this morning was like butter, two inches deep and as carvy as carvy can be. The snow in the trees off of the left side of Fawn was still up to our knees and clean in spots, so we got the best of both worlds on that one."

Just in case you missed it, you should check-out the photos from our infamous Cowboy Downhill on Tuesday. The Steamboat Pilot has a fantastic movie of this year's stampede. Check-out the Cowboy Stampede... People travel the world for this event: "Tim Kitching and Bruce Hill were so taken by the Cowboy Downhill last year that they went out of their way to see it again.

“We’re in Breckenridge (on vacation) this year, so we hired a car and came up for the 34th Cowboy Downhill,” said Kitching, of London. “Seven thousand miles for the Champagne Powder and the Cowboy Downhill — and the Fat Tire.” ...Read complete Steamboat Pilot News Article

This is my 8th winter in Steamboat Springs, and I have NEVER EVER skied this much snow. Sure, every season we have our famous 14 inch, 16 inch, 12 inch powder days. But never have I skied on days when we receive 20+ inches of snow in 24-hours --- THREE DAYS IN A ROW.

Everyone you speak to in Steamboat right now is exhausted. We have skied until our legs are wobbly for over a week. All this powder is taking its toll. Our bodies ache, and so do our cheek muscles. Your can't wipe the grin off our faces!

I might guess that the hot springs might be pretty popular for the next few days. That is, if we can tear ourselves away from the epic conditions for just a few hours.

The snow just keeps on coming. My legs are tired from skiing, and my arms are tired from scraping snow off my car every morning.
A winter storm dropped a whopping 25 inches of new snow in 24 hours yesterday, and today it has been topped up with another 7 inches overnight. For the past 10 days, more than three feet of snow has fallen mid-mountain at the resort and there are no signs of letting up any time soon. Steamboat is enjoying some of the best snow in the Rocky Mountains and one of the largest mid-mountain bases of the major Colorado destination resorts.
The resort is currently in a storm cycle that has yielded:
• 15 inches at mid-mountain and 25 inches at the summit overnight
• 21 inches at mid-mountain and 31 inches at the summit in past 48-hours
• 24 inches at mid-mountain and 39 inches at the summit in the past three days
• 29 inches at mid and 46 inches at the summit in the past four days
• 38 inches at mid and 53 inches at the summit in the past five days.

The resort is reporting a 62-inch base at mid-mountain and 76-inch base at the summit on powder conditions. Since the resort opened on November 30th, snow has fallen 32 out of 42days (76.2%) with 18 of those days recording four or more inches. So farthis season, Steamboat has been blanketed by 205 inches (17.08 feet) atmid-mountain and 192 inches (16 feet) at the summit.

More than 15 feet of new snow has fallen at Steamboat this season! In fact, it has snowed 36 out of 49 days since Nov. 21st. The forecast continues to call for snow this week with Steamboat in very active weather pattern.
I managed to sneak in three runs this morning on the Steamboat Ski Resort. The first run down Rudi's was not spectacular. It was a little hard and scaped away. I was a little dismayed... but the surprize awaited. I found untracked snow down Storm Peak Face; knee-deep powder in Triangle; and excellent conditions down one of my favorites, Cyclone.
Each year I seem to find a different favorite run. The first year it was West Side. I was not yet an advanced skier, and I loved the intimdating vertical on this run, as well as the incredible views of the Yampa Valley. During the epic 05/06 435-inch season, I had many memorable days on Rolex. Last year work commitments kept me in the office, so I was not skiing as often. Hence, I had to seek out the very last stashes in the trees alongside the Sunshine Lift Line trail. This year, without a doubt, I keep migrating to Sideburn. Sideburn is tucked on the edge of the infamous Shadows and Closets tree run, but is a little more open and spits you in and out of some meadows. Today, once again, Sideburn surprized me with some untracked snow.
I wish I had had all day to ski, to have time to stop for a Hot Chocolate, and end the day with Apres ski drinks at Slopeside Bar and Grill. I may not have been lucky enough to ski all day, but I was blessed to ski the few excellent runs that I could squeeze in.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction has issued a snow advisory warning for Northwest Colorado and is forecasting up to 10 inches in Steamboat Springs. “A strong winter storm will continue to bring snow to the region through this evening,” reads the warning issued Wednesday. ** Winter Storm Warning in affect until 6pm Monday **

Sadly, I am out of town this weekend, and looks like I am missing another powder day. Fortunately, December's epic skiing is as fresh in my mind as this fresh new snow. I can alomost imagine what it is like in Steamboat.

But for more honest insight, let's turn to the Steamboat Ski Resort's Straightalker, Amy Gregorich: "It’s here folks – and it’s not done yet! The most talked-about storm of the season is looming above us as I write this report for you. It started last night by dropping a buttery 9 inches, and is forecast to continue through today and into tomorrow, too. This storm can’t quite seem to make up it’s mind, either, as there are both clear blue areas of sky and dark, looming clouds."

There is a winter storm warning in Steamboat Springs until 6pm Monday. Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

The storms just keep on rolling in to Steamboat Springs. This weekend, the Steamboat Ski Resort received another 20 inches of snow in 48 hours. On Sunday morning, we woke up to the snow report of 11 inches of new snow, and 9 new inches since the ski resort closed on Saturday. Will I ever be able to sleep in again!

One of the greatest things about Steamboat is the trees. Sure, we are renowned for just how awesome our tree skiing is. But what is not often talked about is the protection they provide. On most snowy days in Steamboat, the flakes are big, fat, fluffy clusters of snow. So light and delicate that skiing during a winter storm is very pleasant.

Then occasionally, like every other ski resort, we get storms that blow in like yesterday's storm. Bitterly cold, windy conditions with snow that can bite the skin. But on days like this, you can escape the elements in the trees. Take your turns in the peace and quiet of the aspens and pines.

It's snowing in Steamboat, again! The skiing / riding is idyllic, but bundle-up. It's cold outside.

The Steamboat Ski Resort released the following information in a press release yesterday: With a recent series of storms dropping more than 4 feet of snow in the past week, the Steamboat Ski Resort has surpassed 100 inches of snow in the month of the December for just the 6th time in the past 29 years.

“December has been a Champagne Powder snow generating machine and with five days still to go, we’re closing in on a top-three month in terms of total snowfall,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “Steamboat is enjoying some of the best snow in the Rocky Mountains, with one of the largest mid-mountain bases of any major Colorado destination resort.”

The resort is currently in an active storm cycle that has yielded over 2 feet of new snow in the past 72-hours. During the past seven days, the resort has piled up a whooping 49 inches (4.08 ft) of fresh snow at mid-mountain and is reporting a 50-inch base at both the mid-mountain and summit locations on powder conditions. Steamboat is currently offering powderhounds 2,820 acres (95% of the mountain), 147 trails, 17 lifts and 3,668 vertical feet of skiing/riding enjoyment.

For the month of December, 102 inches (8.5 feet) has fallen at mid-mountain, making this the 6th time the resort has surpassed the 100” mark for the month in the past 29 years. The resort has seen snow 21 out of 26 days (80.7%) this month, with 12 of those days recording more than four inches. This season, 142 inches (11.8 ft) of Champagne Power snow has staked up at the ski area’s mid-mountain site.

The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory for Steamboat from 6pm this evening until 6pm Thursday. Sunny skies and mild temperatures today likely will be replaced by heavy snowstorms and low temperatures for the next week. Longer range forecasts continue to show the area in an active weather pattern heading into the New Year.
